British Foreign Office has included an additional eleven further countries to its official warning roster about the risks of toxic alcohol contamination from tainted beverages.

The updated warning covers Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda due to evidence showing "a global increase in the frequency of documented incidents" of toxic alcohol contamination.

Only a few weeks ago, the government had already included Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the existing register, in response to a number of serious incidents like the deadly death of half a dozen visitors in Laos in 2024.

Travelers are being warned that as little as small amounts of methanol can lead to permanent eye damage or loss of life within twelve to forty-eight hrs.

What is Methanol and How is it Used?

Toxic alcohol is a poisonous industrial alcohol typically utilized in coolant, windscreen washer fluid, and thinner. It is not meant for ingestion.

While it is naturally produced during the production of alcoholic drinks, licensed producers lower it to minimal, harmless amounts for drinking through the refining procedure.

But in certain nations, it is clandestinely blended into alcoholic drinks to cut costs, and as it is flavorless and smell-free, it is extremely challenging to identify.

Authorities' Guidance for Tourists

Authorities representative the minister stated that every traveler should know the signs of toxic alcohol toxicity.

"While consuming alcohol in foreign countries, choose well-known venues and steer clear of unlicensed drinks or free shots," Falconer advised.
