In the latest English football updates, a key midfielder was handed a lengthy suspension, a manager has pointed out a defender's mistakes to prove an argument, and the Manchester City manager has demanded defensive betterment after a chaotic victory.
Burnley's midfielder Hannibal Mejbri was given a four-game suspension and a financial fine for improper behaviour during a recent fixture versus Leeds United. The Football Association stated the player was referred a separate regulatory commission following allegations of spitting towards visiting fans around the 67th point during a 2-0 victory by Burnley.
A statement explained: “A disciplinary panel has punished Burnley’s Hannibal Mejbri for his actions in the top-flight match with Leeds of 18 October. It was alleged that the player acted against the rules of football or in an improper way by engaging in offensive and/or unacceptable behaviour through spitting towards the direction of Leeds United supporters.”
It added, “Mejbri later admitted the allegation, and the Regulatory Commission handing down a four-game suspension and a fine following proceedings. The Regulatory Commission’s full explanation for the sanction are to be released in due course.” Burnley, currently 19th in the table, travel to 12th-place Newcastle this Saturday.
The Blues' manager Enzo Maresca has argued that not having seasoned players is not an issue for his club, highlighting how defender Tosin Adarabioyo's years did not prevent the 28-year-old from playing a bad game in a 3-1 loss against Leeds United.
The Italian coach, who manages the most youthful squad in the division, does not feel that inexperience was a factor in their poor result. He presented his case by singling out Tosin, the oldest outfield player in the lineup, after he produced a mistake-riddled performance in central defence.
“We always talk about experience after we drop points,” Maresca stated. “When we beat Barcelona, we drew with Arsenal, no one was talking about older players. I know that if we don’t win, people are always searching for an explanation, but in my view why we didn’t win against Leeds was not down to the experience, it was because we were not at our best.”
He added, “Who is the most senior player for us on the pitch? Who was? Was he any good? So, it’s not about his age. It’s about those 11 men, they were simply not good enough.”
Pep Guardiola has stated the champions have learnt from a midweek thriller at Fulham and the game is now forgotten. The team held on to claim a 5-4 win during a incredible encounter at Craven Cottage, after leading 5-1 with almost 60 minutes gone.
Coming after they fought off a comeback to win 3-2 in the previous fixture, prompting more questions regarding if City possess the defensive steel required to mount a title challenge to leaders Arsenal. “It’s forgotten,” Guardiola said. “Valuable learnings, I hope. At this level, at all the clubs, you have to take onboard both good and bad in the good things and bad things and think of the next one.”
“Of course I am worried,” Guardiola added. “We try to analyse what happened, to not concede the goals. With the three goals against Leeds, and five goals against Fulham it shows our versions, correct? So, we have done plenty of positive things. Yet how many attempts had Leeds ? Three? They scored two. It’s not bad. And attempts did Fulham ? Five, six? So our ratio of shots conceded is is high. We must be better.”
The Magpies' recently appointed sporting director, Ross Wilson, has made new deal negotiations with key defenders Tino Livramento and Sven Botman the priority on his to-do list at St James’ Park. He arrived after leaving Nottingham Forest recently and is reassured to learn midfielder Sandro Tonali is on a deal extending to 2029 and, potentially, 2030.
This allows Wilson to prioritise talks for Livramento and Botman's agents. With the former’s current deal set to expire in 2027 and the latter’s a year later, Newcastle's efforts have assumed some urgency.
“My first few days in the job is when I found that Sandro’s contract situation was significantly better than the one I had thought,” he stated. “But it’s no secret that the club would want to extend Tino’s deal and we would want to extend Sven Botman’s too. These talks are underway.”
Head coach Eddie Howe is missing Botman against the home game against Burnley this Saturday, and he expected to remain sidelined for at least another week.
The Hammers' manager Nuno Espírito Santo has confirmed that Lucas Paquetá will return to the starting lineup when they face Brighton on Sunday, after serving his suspension following a red card he received Liverpool.
“It is behind us,” Nuno remarked. “I am confident it won't happen again because he personally admitted the error. We discussed it about it internally. I believe it is over and it will not be repeated.”
He also acknowledged the significant pressure facing his team, currently in the relegation zone before the weekend fixtures. “We cannot avoid it,” he said. “It is a reality. We must confront it. We're battling for survival. We can't shy away from it.”
The Spanish midfielder may keep his place leading the line for Arsenal central striker even when their regular frontmen return from injury. Merino has been playing as a makeshift No 9 because of fitness issues to Viktor Gyokeres, Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus.
Merino found the net for Arsenal’s opener against Brentford and set up Bukayo Saka for their second goal during a 2-0 win which preserved {their|
