Bolsonaro has been arrested after authorities concluded he posed a definite escape threat while under house arrest.
The one-time leader was convicted of planning a military coup in September and sentenced more than over two decades in prison, but he remained under confinement pending appeals.
Brazilian Supreme Court Justice the presiding justice said the action to imprison the elderly politician was a safety action after recent developments were revealed.
This included seeking to disable his tracking device and a summons to a supporters' gathering that could "allow for a possible escape.
Judicial Records Show Escape Concerns
In a filing authorising the custody, the magistrate said data from the unit overseeing the former president's confinement suggested the former leader's plan to remove the electronic ankle bracelet to guarantee victory in his escape.
This, it said, would be "facilitated by the confusion caused by the gathering called by his son.
His child, Flávio Bolsonaro, who works as a legislator, called for a gathering of his supporters near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday evening.
Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on social media on Friday: Do you plan to struggle for your country, or watch it all from your phone there on your couch? I invite you to struggle with us."
He said the vigil would be so backers could seek divine intervention for his well-being and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our land."
Embassy Asylum Concerns
Part of the judge's decision was the potential of the former president's transfer to diplomatic missions near the home, considering that the inquiries revealed a history of planning to request asylum through a diplomatic representation", a announcement said.
The court filing underscores that the American diplomatic mission in the national capital, Brasilia, is situated around 13km from his dwelling.
Worldwide Consequences
His judicial problems have generated frustration from fellow right-wing populist US President Trump, prompting him to impose a fifty percent tax on Brazilian product imports.
Bolsonaro is being detained in a national police facility in Brasilia and will have a detention review on the following day.
Recent Legal Requests
It was only on the previous day that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the Supreme Court to authorize him to serve his whole jail sentence under domestic detention, with electronic monitoring.
They also asked that he be permitted to exit his dwelling for medical care, saying he needed ongoing care for respiratory ailments and other illnesses.
Background on Conviction
He was convicted of orchestrating a conspiracy aimed at keeping him in power after he failed to win the national vote to his left-wing rival, Lula.
Supreme Court justices said that he knew of a plan which involved plans to assassinate the current president and his vice-presidential running mate, Alckmin, and to arrest and execute the presiding judge - the High Court judge who has been overseeing Bolsonaro's trial.
The scheme was thwarted because it couldn't obtain the endorsement of the armed forces officials. The current president was took office without issue on the first day of 2023.
But a seven days after, on January 8th, many his backers invaded and destroyed government buildings in the federal district, the capital city.
The police took action and around 1,500 people were detained.
The justices found that the demonstrators had been provoked by him whose strategy, they said, was for the Brazilian military to take action, bring back stability and return him to office.
At the time, his attorneys called the 27 years and three months sentence unreasonably severe".
He was also prohibited from campaigning for office until 2060 - a decade minus two years after the completion of his term.
The former president called the trial a "witch hunt and said it was intended to stop him competing in the 2026 national vote.
