EU Might Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson States

The EU could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the United States against five Europeans working on fighting online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.

European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders such as the French president charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions were placed on individuals who have been central to efforts to enact legislation governing US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to punish US perspectives they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in criticizing the decision.

The bans were enacted this week against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

The DSA is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities argue the rules are necessary to combat hate speech and falsehoods.

This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and European institutions.
